Summary of Aims/ Objectives of the Project
  1. Promotion of education and conservation of biodiversity among the students and general public.
  2. Constitution of women Self Help Groups (SHGs) and imparting training to them on Revitalization of home remedies for all primary health problems through herbals.
  3. Establishment of demo garden of Ethno Medicinal Plants and educating the public on need for conservation and usage of plants for human, animal and plant health.
  4. Contact programmes schools and colleges who are interested to establish Eco-Clubs and promote gardens of Medicinal Plants in their campuses with different themes.
  5. Supporting different industrial houses that are interested to promote biodiversity garden in their campuses with different packages scheme.
Expected Outcome
  1. Establishment of a Shade House and display of about 200 species along with their description.
  2. Construction of a Dark Room for viewing audio – visual programme and for display photographs of different species along the walls.
  3. Imparting awareness programmes on Conservation of biodiversity particularly on medicinal plants species to the visitors of the Park.
  4. Establishment of Eco-Clubs in interested schools training the Club members on identification, conservation and utilization of plant species.
  5. Imparting Training to interested Farmers, Groups on cultivation of medicinal plants including quality control, bio-farming and bio-pesticides, storage and marketing.
  6. Organizing village youth and promoting entrepreneurship programmes based on herbal plants.
  7. Educating the women to organize Self Help groups (SHG) and promoting Kitchen Herbal Garden (KHG) along with training on home remedies.
  8. Assisting interested college and industrial houses to establish biodiversity gardens in their campus with their own financial resources.

Summary of Aims/ Objectives of the Project
  1. Ex-situ conservation of 16 endemic and threatened plant species of the Palni Hills.
  2. Involving the environmental trainees of the Institute in the techniques of ex-situ conservation, which they can replicate in their own places.
  3. Promoting environmental/conservation education through effective information dissemination, publication of ‘Shola’ Newsletter, education and awareness campaigns, etc.
Expected Outcome
  1. Conservation status assessments of 16 targeted RET plant species from Palni Hills.
  2. Ex-situ conservation of 16 targeted RET plant species: Actinodaphne bourneae, Alsophila crinita, Ceropegia thwaitesii, Elaeocarpus blascoi, Ficus angladei, Hoya wightii spp., palniensis, kaemferia evansii, Phyllanthus chandrabosei, Pimpinella pulneyensis, Plectranthus bourneae, Psydrax ficiformis, Sonerila pulneyensis, Trichoglottis tenera, Utleria salicifolia, vernonia fysonii, Vernonia pulneyensis.
  3. Development of protocols for seed germination and maintenance of seed collections of the targeted species.
  4. Organization of awareness camps/education sessions for students and locals.
  5. Publication of four issues of “Shola” Newsletter during the project period.
  6. Reintroduction of samples raised from seeds/vegetative propagation in selected spots in the degraded areas of the Palni hills with the help and support of the State Department of Forests and Wildlife, Tamil Nadu.
