- Bioinformatics
by developing computerized / electronic databases on Indian plants
with special focus on medicinal, aromatic, dyes, gum and tannin
yielding plants and products and applications of IT in plant science
research.
- Biotechnology
(biotech processes/ products) including trans-disciplinary studies
on molecular biology and genetic engineering for the development
of transgenic plants.
- Genetics,
plant breeding and agrotechnology selection and genetic enhancement
for the development of new promising varieties of economically
important non-crop and wild plants.
- Enriching
the national herbarium and maintaining over 1,25,000 national
reference collections and making them accessible to a large
number of users.
- Developing
and maintaining a national botanic garden with over 7,000
species/ cultivars with theme gardens for eco-education including
special facilities for physically challenged and visually impaired
persons.
- Participating
in national and international network programmes in niche areas
of plant sciences e.g. partner in national network programmes
such as NATP programme, National Neem network, DBT's BTIS Net
programme - National Bioinformatics Center; nodal agency in Eco-education
and Environmental awareness in the country and global network
programmes like International Legume Database and Information
Service (ILDIS) BIONET International, GBIF and investing
in nature and leader for South Asia.
- Providing
consultancy, training, education, advise, information and services
for the identification of plants, floristic studies, conservation
of rare and endangered plants and their sustainable utilization,
cultivation and products including herbal drugs and pharmaceuticals,
nutraceuticals, cosmaceuticals , dehydration of flowers and foliage,
horticulture, floriculture, gardening, landscaping, bioinformatics-
plant diversity databases, and IT applications in plant sciences,
bio-technology-tissue culture protocols and transgenic plants,
etc.
- Undertaking
national and international exchange/ collaborative/ consultancy
programmes.
-
Informing the public about Institute's activities by disseminating
