Expected outcome includes: 1. a comperhensive account of the taxonomy, ecology, threats, conservation and ethno-botanical aspects of the 10 selected species in particular and several other life-supporting species in general. 2. development of protocols for micropropagation of the 10 candidate species. 3. development of agro-technology for cultivation of the candidate species. 4. establishment of conservatory garden and plant nurseries at households, schools and colleges, etc. 5. cultivation trials of 3 medicinal plants and 3 orchids. 6. Semi domestication and planting of three wild food species in forest area. 7. establishment of market tie up for selling the cultivated harvests. 8. promotion of wider self-use of the products/new materials in demand. 9. designing a database that gives all available information on the ten candidate species. 10. publication of education materials in local language and English. 11. documentation and establishment of germplasm collection of all the candidate species and a mother nursery at CAB, Wayanad.

Embelia ribes A.DC., 7. Dioscorea bamiltonii Hook.f, 8. Mangifera indica, 9. Ochlandra travancorica and 10. Garcinia indica (Thours) Choisy.

The specific aims and objectives of the project are: 1. establishment of an arboretum of 100 endemic and endangered plants of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (NBR); 2. standardization of the techniques for production of seedlings in the nursery for endemic and endangered taxon; 3. field demonstration about the relationship that plants have developed with their environment; 4. functioning as an interpretation center for plant identification, conservation and utilitarian values and potentials.

Expected outcome includes: 1. addition of 100 species of endemic and endangered plants of NBR to the CZP arboretum. 2. establishment of a Green house, Mist tent and enhancement of the existing Museum facilities. 3. development and management of a herbarium so that it will serve as a resource center for plant identification.

The specific aims & objectives of the project are to: 1. introduce RET species of Eastern/Western Ghats to the Arboretum; 2. introduce native trees of dry deciduous & tropical dry evergreen forests (TDEF); 3. introduce ethnobotanically important trees of Eastern Ghats; 4. focus on ex-situ conservation of RET species; 5. develop a Seed Bank and Nursery for propagation of RET and economically and medicinally important species; 6. develop the Arboretum as a Tree Gene-Park for germplasm conservation; 7. use the facilities for research and teaching Conservation Biology / Environmental education to college/school students in institutions around Chennai; 8. provide appropriate plants for growing in the city and barren areas; 9. grow Food Plants for Butterfly larvae and to provide an opportunity to observe and learn the plant-insect interaction; 10. conserve medicinal plants and important pteridophytes / gymnosperms.
