Expected outcome includes: 1. renovation and enrichment of the JMEG; 2. ex-situ conservation of 20 mangrove species at JMEG; 3. education & awareness campaigns based on mangrove ecosystems and the species that they harbor for the benefit of students, teachers, local people and other interested target groups. Booklets on importance of mangrove eco-system such as its function as a sink for Kolkota sewage and as a buffer towards annual high-gales for Kolkota and suburbs, etc. will be prepared and published. Brochures highlighting uniqueness of Sunderban mangals will also be published. The Booklets will also cover other such key themes as the economic benefits of both in-situ and ex-situ conservation, marketable and non-marketable values of the mangrove diversity, optimum utilization for sustainable management of the mangals of Sunderbans, etc; 4. utilizing ex-situ collections at JMEG for further integrated conservation programmes to be undertaken jointly with the Deptt. of Forests and Wildlife, Govt. of West Bengal.

 
  Enriching of existing Orchid Germplasm at Orchid Research Centre (ORC), Tipi, Arunachal Pradesh

The project aims to enrich the existing germplasm further by adding about 50 more wild species and about 25 hybrids from Arunachal Pradesh and other states of North East India and conducting collection tours and exchange process with an aim to create awareness among the wider group of people regarding the importance of Orchid conservation and their sustainable utility for research, medicine and income generation activities.

Expected outcome includes: 1. collection, introduction and ex-situ conservation of 50 native species; introduction and multiplication of 25 hybrids of orchids from Arunachal Pradesh and other & N.E. States; 2. construction of an orchid house; 3. completion of installation of Electric fencing (1000 m) around ORC, Tipi.

The project aims at: 1. identification of innovative approaches that effectively link conservation of ten endangered species with the improvement of livelihoods; 2. increased availability of 10 most needful plant species to communities / industries by ensuring the conservation of its wild resource base and ex-situ levels; 3. enhanced food, health and livelihood security of forest-dwelling communities through the utilization of the prioritized species; 4. improved awareness of local institutions and policy-making set-ups on conservation and sustainable use of the ten species selected.
