International Conference on Botanical Gardens and Sustainable Development
Venue and Date : Xishuangbanna, China, March 13, 2004

The development of botanical gardens is one of the indications of human civilizations. Botanical gardens are closely associated with the utilization and protection of plant resources. They are important centers for conservation of plant diversity, re-introduction and domestication. As ideal places for recreation and tourism, botanical gardens serve an important role in public education and academic exchanges. It is no doubt that the development of botanical gardens in the world has contributed a great deal to its socio-economic development.

The “International Conference on Botanical Gardens and Sustainable Development” organized by Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and in collaboration with BGCI and IABG will be held on 1st to 3rd of March, 2004 in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China, following the previous Botanical Gardens Conferences held in Nanjing (1988) and Wuxi (1993). The organizing committee invites experts from botanical gardens world-wide to Xishuangbanna to communicate and share experiences in garden management and its contributions to economic development.
