Welcome to the Second issue of the Indian Botanic Garden Network Newsletter. Since its launch at the beginning of this year, IIN-India is progressing well with the cooperation and support of partner gardens in establishing the first ever Indian Botanic Gardens Network (IBGN).

During the last three months the significant outcomes include: the organization of the first national conference on botanic gardens of India; the preparation of the Indian Botanic Gardens Network proposal; the establishment of a database and website for Indian botanic gardens, and; the initiation of a national conservation programme for Indian botanic gardens. The latter has included the circulation of an invitation to botanic gardens to submit applications for a small grants programme.

This issue highlights the summary of discussions and Lucknow Declaration. It also includes the highlights of the formal launch of IIN - India by the Hon'ble Minister of State for Science & Technology, Govt. of India at the function held at New Delhi.

A summary of recommendations made at two other meetings relevant to Indian botanic gardens, namely the first National seminar cum meeting of BioNET INTERNATIONAL programme and the Third Global Biodiversity Forum (GBF)-South Asia Regional meeting held at Dhaka, are also included in this issue.

For future editions, Indian botanic gardens are invited to take active part in contributing highlights of their main
activities, salient achievements and any other recent development which they wish to share / popularize among the botanic gardens community of India.

 
     
 
  • An improved standard throughout the botanic gardens of India;
  • An increased level of conservation for India's flora, and;
  • An improved standing for India's botanic gardens in the international community.

Inauguration:

Dr. S.C.Rai Hon'ble Mayor, Lucknow inaugurated the conference. In his inaugural address Dr. Rai complimented HSBC and BGCI for having chosen Lucknow, a city of Gardens, as the right place to start the IIN-India programme. He appreciated the overall aims and objectives of the program which he hoped, would enable to establish a database, website and network of 140 Gardens of India. He assured that he would extend full support to this programme.
