To be held April 17 - 22, 2004 in Barcelona, Spain

Themes
The Congress programme will address the following themes during a week of plenary sessions, workshops, symposia and other meetings:

Implementing plant conservation through botanic gardens
Implementation of the International Agenda for Botanic Gardens in Conservation and the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation.

Botanic gardens and ecosystem conservation
Integrated conservation, combining species level conservation with the management of communities and ecosystems and drawing together plant conservation organizations and stakeholders.

Education and sustainability
Environmental education, the sustainable use of plant resources and the awareness of plant diversity.

Botanic garden horticulture and development
Garden development in areas such as new botanic gardens, information technology, collections
management, fund raising, garden design and sustainable practices in botanic gardens.

Botanic garden research
Recent advances in restoration ecology, conservation biology and genebanking, and the improvement of the scientific, conservation and educational value of living collections, with an emphasis on Mediterranean floras.

Heritage
Ethnobotany, cultural diversity, the botanic garden as a cultural and scientific heritage and the relationship of botanic gardens with their local community.
