To assist the development of the newly established Indian Botanic Gardens Network, a national conference is to be held in Lucknow from 2-5 June 2003. Details of registration arrangements will be sent out to all gardens shortly.

  1. Aim:

  • To discuss the status of botanic gardens in India and interact with garden persons/ staff.
  • To finalize the proposal for establishing a network of botanical gardens of India.
  • To finalize the first draft of a National Action Plan of botanic gardens of India which would incorporate the International Agenda for Botanic Gardens Conservation and the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation.
  • To review the status of various botanic gardens programmes such as biodiversity conservation, databasing, networking and websites, ecoeducation, empowering women and associated knowledge systems.
  1. Brief programme outline:
    Day I: Conservation and sustainability

  • Background information about plant conservation in India, the International Agenda and the Global Strategy.
  • Background information about community based programmes in India
  • Discussions on empowering women to assist in the sustainable utilization of local biodiversity by promoting home gardens and associated knowledge.
  • Discussions on other community based activities.

    Day II: National Botanic Gardens Network and associated databases

  • Information on other national networks and their role.
  • Discussions to determine what is wanted for India's network.
  • Discussions to determine what information people would like to see stored National Conservation programme and associated database.
  • Information on what is proposed (including the small grant scheme).
  • Input on what else can be achieved.

    Day III: Website for Indian Botanic Gardens.

  • Information on websites and their values.
  • Discussions on what people would like to see on the Indian botanic garden website.

    Day IV: Garden based eco-education programmes.

  • Background information on eco-education programmes in India (and internationally) and the proposed Investing in Nature programmes.
  • Discussions on the proposed model education programmes.
  • Discussions on what is wanted in the education manual.
