National Network
Coordination: For the first two years, the work of the IBGN and its development will be facilitated and guided by Advisory Council constituted during the National Conference. While the BGCI is working with NBRI as a part of the Investing in Nature programme (IIN-India), the national office will be based at NBRI in Lucknow. This office will be responsible for management of the network, the maintenance of the databases, the editing of the website and the production of the Newsletter. Regional Network Coordination: It is proposed to establish few regional offices with a view to give more regional focus. Regional offices of the network will assist in the disseminating information to regional gardens and will provide regional focal points for meetings. A proposed regional plan (based on geographical boundaries) is as follows: Region 1: North West: Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh. Region 2: West: Goa, Gujarat (Diu, Daman, Dadar and Nagar Haveli), Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Region 3: Central: Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Region 4: East: Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Sikkim and West Bengal. Region 5: North East: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura. Region 6: South: Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu. E-GROUP OF IBGN An e-group has been created under the IBGN. This e-group will facilitate – a) Electronic exchange of ideas and information b) Review of R&D proposals through email c) Sharing of recent development among gardens d) Assist in formulating the new proposals. An IBGN web server has been installed at NBRI. So far about 30 email ids have been allotted to all the already registered members (Appendix 5). The e-group will expand with new registrants. |
MANAGEMENT AND STRENGTHENING OF IBGN |
Status of IBGN The NBRI-BGCI collaborative programme, of which IBGN is an important part, has been approved by the Director General, CSIR, Govt. of India under "Investing in Nature - Conservation of threatened plants of India and establishment of Indian Botanic Gardens Network (IIN- India)" vide CSIR letter no. 29/25/2003-RPBD dated 26.03.2003. As such, the development of the IBGN is well recognized as an important part of plant conservation in India. Advisory Council The advisory council will be composed of a small number (up to 20). Half of the members will be regional representatives elected or co-opted from the different sectors by members. It is important that the control of IBGN should reside with membership although responsibility for co-ordination resides with the national office. An interim council was formed at the Lucknow conference, composed of delegates attending that meeting. The interim council agreed that the aim would be to elect a longer-term advisory council at the first national IBGN conference from the membership of the IBGN. National Meetings As there is a need for all members to meet regularly and drive the medium to long-term direction and strategy of the network, national conferences will be held in different regions every two years. Registration fees from conferences may in part be used to sponsor attendance of representatives from less well-supported institutions, or to provide some other use or benefit to the membership. In addition, IBGN Council meetings will be held on a more regular basis to assist with short-term operational activities and concerns of the Network. |
FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO IBGN |
The initial development of IBGN is being supported/ facilitated by BGCI initially for a period of two years. However, there is a need to simultaneously work on making network the self-reliant and sustainable. The possibilities of imposing a fee and introducing charge for the sharing of resources and providing services may be worked out later as the establishment of the network progresses. |
