Background


As a part of the Investing in Nature (IIN) partnership, Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) has launched an international programme for implementing the International Agenda for Botanic Gardens in Conservation as well as specific national programmes in Argentina, Brazil, China including Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East, North America (including Canada and the USA) and South-East Asia.

NBRI in collaboration with BGCI has started an in-country programme “Investing In Nature - Conservation of Threatened Plants of India and establishment of an Indian Botanic Garden Network (IIN-India)” for four years. A major part of the programme for India is the establishment of a botanic garden network, an associated database of the member gardens, their activities and their collections and the preparation of an Action Plan to help guide their future development and participation in plant conservation.

 

AIMS OF IIN-INDIA PROGRAMME


The following are the aims of IIN India:
  • To develop a database, network and website on about 140 botanical gardens of India, which will help in closer interactions among the botanic gardens for undertaking conservation and sustainable use of plant diversity as well as in eco-education activities. The authenticated database/ website and linkage with global website will serve as the referral source/ manual for those who are interested to know about the plant wealth and in-country conservation activities.
  • To provide information on the status of demand and supply of important plant species of medicinal/ aromatic/ ornamental value, to various agencies in India.
  • To provide intensive training through six training programmes to persons from selected botanic gardens in modern methods of conservation of plants. Such a programme is in line with the strategy now agreed by the Parties to the CBD (Cop Decision VI/ 2002).
  • To facilitate in establishing/ accomplishing state of the art facilities and blue prints for modern gardens, including three model education programmes, medicinal plant projects and a major new botanic garden project, probably a joint project with the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF)/ Botanical Survey of India (BSI) to develop the Botanic Garden of Indian Republic in Delhi.
  • To publish a handbook of education in Indian Botanic Gardens.
  • To develop a national conservation programme through the initiation of a small grant programme open to botanic gardens throughout India.
  • To assist members to protect the sovereign rights/IPR on their plant diversity resources.
     

OUTCOMES OF IIN-INDIA PROGRAMME


The following outcomes are expected from the IIN-India programme:
  1. An increased level of conservation for India’s flora.
  2. Increased involvement of India’s botanic gardens in plant conservation.
  3. Improved networking amongst the Indian botanic gardens community.
  4. An improved level of conservation, education and horticulture in botanic gardens of India.
  5. An increased profile for India’s botanic gardens both nationally and internationally.
  6. Increased visitation to Indian botanic gardens.
  7. A better public awareness of the roles of botanic gardens in India.
  8. A documented resource of threatened plants in living collections and seed banks for use in conservation programmes.
  9. A recognized national mission for Indian botanic gardens.
  10. An increased involvement by botanic gardens in eco-education.
  11. An increased collaboration between botanic gardens and non-botanic garden institutions and organizations.
     

FORUM MEETS


"Forum meetings" is one of the activities earmarked in IIN India with the following aims:
  • To review the program by CMG
  • To organize meeting of AC
  • To organize time to time meetings at coordinating Institution for
    1. Popularizing IIN India
    2. Obtain suggestions on new ideas, improvements if any ongoing activity of IIN India
    3. Obtain suggestion on optimizing application of research result for benefits of public
    4. Establishing linkage with on going national and international efforts
    5. Evolving future strategies and new collaborations
