INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME - INVESTING IN NATURE INDIA

Over the next four years, the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) in Lucknow will work with BGCI as the coordinating institution for Investing in Nature - India (IIN - India).

The following are the details of some of the regional activities for India's national programme:
  • It will enable India to develop a database, network and website on about 140 botanical gardens of India, which will help in closer interactions among the botanic gardens for under taking conservation and sustainable use of plant diversity as well as in eco-education activities.
  • The authenticated database / website and linkage with global website will serve as the referral source / manual for those who are interested to know about the plant wealth and in-country conservation activities.
  • The database will also provide information on the status of demand and supply of important plant species of medicinal / aromatic / ornamental value, to various agencies in India.
  • About 60 persons from selected botanic gardens will be given intensive training in modern methods of conservation of plants. Such a programme is in line with the strategy now agreed by the Parties to the CBD (Cop Decision VI/ 2002). A total of six training programmes will be organized under this programme.
  • It will facilitate in establishing/ accomplishing state of the art facilities and blue prints for modern gardens, including three model education programmes, medicinal plant projects and a major new botanic garden project, probably a joint project with the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF)/ Botanical Survey of India (BSI) to develop the Botanic Garden of Indian Republic in Delhi.
  • A handbook of education in Indian Botanic Gardens will be published.
  • It will develop a national conservation programme through the initiation of a small grant programme open to botanic gardens throughout India.
  • It will assist members to protect the sovereign rights / IPR on their plant diversity resources.
Expected outcomes include:
  • A database, website established.
  • Ca. 600 rare or endangered plant species rescued from extinction through cultivation in Indian botanic gardens.
  • 100 botanic gardens involved in a new national botanic garden network in India.
  • 60 staff trained in Indian botanic gardens.
  • Handbook on education distributed to 100 botanic gardens in India.
  • One model development plan prepared for a historic botanic garden in a major Indian city, probably in Delhi.
  • 3 model medicinal plants and forest resource conservation programmes created.
